Applegreen’s Welcome Break Expands with Cornwall Services Acquisition
Applegreen has expanded its Welcome Break motorway services business in Britain with the acquisition of Cornwall’s only major services area.
Located near Bodmin on the A30, Cornwall Services features a Shell fuel station and a strong line‑up of food and retail brands, including McDonald’s, Greggs, Taco Bell, Costa and Mountain Warehouse. Since opening in 2014, the location has become a key stopping point for visitors travelling into and out of Cornwall and currently employs around 200 people across full‑time and part‑time roles.
John Diviney, Welcome Break Chief Executive, welcomed the acquisition, describing it as a strong strategic fit for the network.
"We are delighted to add what is a very popular service area to our existing Welcome Break motorway network in the UK. We look forward to working with the brands on site and will continue to offer road users the opportunity to rest, refuel and continue their journey as they travel in and out of Cornwall.”
Part of a Major Five‑Year UK Investment Programme
Welcome Break operates 61 service areas and 31 hotels across the UK, employing more than 6,000 people and serving over 85 million customers every year. The company is currently delivering a significant capital programme to enhance the scale and quality of its network.
“We plan to invest about £400 million (€463 million) in our service area business over the next five years through building new facilities and upgrading our existing locations,” said Mr Diviney.
“We’re a long‑term investor in the British economy and see significant potential to add to our network and upgrade our portfolio on a regular basis.”
The expansion follows a number of major developments this year, including:
- A new £55 million motorway service area opened near Rotherham on the M1
- A £12 million service area added at Hickling on the A46/A406
These two openings created more than 250 new jobs.
A Strong Heritage and a Growing Platform
Welcome Break traces its origins back to 1959 and is recognised as one of the leading motorway service providers in the UK. It operates a wide mix of well‑known food, beverage and retail brands such as Starbucks, Pret, KFC, Pizza Express, Greggs, Krispy Kreme, Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell, Londis, Waitrose and WHSmith.
The business is majority‑owned by Applegreen, which operates service areas and forecourt locations across Ireland, the UK and the United States. Applegreen operates around 435 locations and is in the process of investing €1 billion to expand its business. In 2024, the company recorded €3.8 billion in annual sales and employed approximately 16,900 people.
The acquisition of Cornwall Services strengthens Welcome Break’s strategic footprint and supports Applegreen’s ongoing investment in high‑quality, customer‑focused service areas across its growing international network.
